Gass is a senior at the Cranford Achievement Program, an alternative educational setting for students who struggle- in traditional school environments.
Police said Gass and the other Cranford man had been engaged in a long-term dispute with the Roselle men, but did not specify what the argument Tuesday was about or why the Roselle men were on the scene. At midday Wednesday, Gass was being held in the Cranford Police Department on $10,000 bail, but was expected to be released shortly. Nor were any further charges against Gass anticipated, police said. Police said the men were located and interviewed, but no further arrests were planned. After the shooting, the Roselle men fled to a car parked on South Avenue and drove away. At press time, the gun had not been recovered. Gass was not in possession of the gun when he was arrested at the scene shortly after officers arrived, police said. Eyewitnesses reported Curtis was holding a young child when she was shot, but the child was not injured. She was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where she was treated and released. Curtis was standing in the street when the bullet struck her in the lower back, police said. The bullet missed its intended target and struck Gass's aunt, Tanya Curtis, 45, of 8 Johnson Ave. During the fight, Gass allegedly pulled out a small-caliber handgun and fired a shot at one of the men. Gass and another Cranford man had been in an argument with about six Roselle men, all between ages 17 and 19, police said. to a report of an argument in the roadway outside 22 Johnson Avenue.
